In 2024, Northvolt secured another $5 billion in funding to expand production and R&D, with the German government providing €902 million to support the construction of an EV battery plant in northern Germany.

Samsung SDI operates two factories in Hungary, and LG Chem has invested hundreds of millions in Poland to boost production to 70GWh. These expansions benefit Europe’s supply chain but also increase competition for local companies like Northvolt.

Despite its challenges, Northvolt’s technical expertise and innovation potential remain significant. Led by former Tesla executives, the company has deep experience in battery development. Northvolt also focuses on sustainability, aiming to create the “greenest battery” through recycling and renewable energy.
