Testing a Pipe Lifetime Multiplier: Build the Exposure Worksheet First

A large lifetime multiplier can look persuasive while combining incomparable records. The practical first step is an exposure worksheet, not another promotional ratio. For a Sanxin ceramic pipe evaluation, collect the information that makes the two component histories comparable. The worksheet should preserve missing data and different removal reasons rather than turn them into a precise claim.

Put each component history on its own row

Identify the component, installed drawing revision and construction. Record installation, inspection, repair and removal events separately. Include the reason for removal in plain language: planned opportunity, unacceptable condition and unrelated equipment work are different endpoints. A component still operating has no completed removal endpoint to place in the same comparison.

Connect operating periods to the route and material handled. Do not use total plant production without checking whether it represents material that passed through the component. A branch or intermittently used route can have a different exposure from the plant total, and that distinction may control the interpretation.

Choose an exposure measure that the records support

Where reliable throughput is available, report it with its units and source. Keep calendar duration and operating time as separate fields. Neither should silently substitute for the other. Idle periods can extend the time a component stays installed without adding the same material exposure as active transfer.

Do not estimate missing throughput by copying an unrelated average and present the result as measured. A planning estimate can be useful if labelled and accompanied by its assumptions. Its uncertainty remains part of any comparison. If the records cannot support a direct ratio, describe the histories and the next information needed instead.

Treat condition endpoints consistently

Define the accepted condition that prompts action for each construction. A steel shell measurement and a ceramic surface photograph may cover different features. The inspection program must retain structural responsibilities while examining ceramic joints, edges and retention where relevant. One material's observed condition should not be called equivalent to another's endpoint without a valid basis.

Consider a hypothetical comparison between a steel spool removed during a convenient overhaul and a ceramic-lined spool still operating during a quieter production campaign. Dividing their calendar intervals would not establish completed relative life. This is a comparison example, not a performance result. Preserve both rows and state why a direct multiplier is unresolved.

Turn the worksheet into a useful trial plan

Use the gaps to decide what the next evaluation should record. Agree component identity, exposure source, repeatable inspection positions and the action criteria with the equipment owner. Keep feed changes, repairs and altered route geometry in the record. They can influence the result independently of the ceramic material. If a spare is exchanged during a campaign, split the exposure at that event and preserve both component identities. Combining their operating periods would create a history that belongs to neither assembly alone.

Send Sanxin the component drawing, operating duty and the comparison question along with the available history. Ask for an identified proposed assembly and evidence relevant to that duty. At review, distinguish observed exposure, inspected condition and any forecast. A defensible worksheet may conclude that more observation is needed; that is more useful than a precise lifetime number built from unequal endpoints or unsupported assumptions.

Can total plant output always be used as pipe exposure?

Only if it represents the material actually passing through that component. Check branches, intermittent use and the record source. Keep measured throughput, operating time, calendar duration and estimates distinct before calculating or reporting a lifetime comparison.
