Use a Removed Fly-Ash Pipe as Wear Evidence Without Copying Its Damaged Geometry

A removed fly-ash spool can provide valuable evidence of where material contacted the pipe. It may also be worn, distorted or modified, making it an unreliable dimensional master for the replacement. Keep those two roles separate. Preserve its condition and orientation for the wear review while verifying the accepted connection and passage geometry through current drawings or measurements approved by the equipment owner.

Preserve the removed component's context

Record the route position, installed orientation and flow direction before removal where practical. Mark upstream and downstream connections and relate photographs to those references. Retain the operating campaign and reason for renewal. A retired spool without context may show a wear track but leave the review unable to determine how that track aligned with the actual line.

For a hypothetical ash bend, damage may continue toward a downstream connection while a previous patch alters the outside profile. Photograph both the principal wear and the repair. Distinguish what the component experienced from how it was originally designed. Do not let a useful failure specimen become the only reference for manufacturing another assembly.

Separate original features from service changes

Identify worn edges, deposits, patches and deformation where evidence permits. Compare the removed item with the accepted drawing and current mating components. Some differences may be intentional later revisions; others may result from damage. Keep uncertainty visible rather than reconstructing an original dimension from an unexplained worn surface.

Check connection alignment, finished bore and required installed envelope using verified references. A new ceramic-lined spool occupies internal space differently from an unlined shell, so matching the old external outline does not establish the usable passage. The equipment owner should accept any dimensional or support changes before the replacement is treated as installable.

Use the wear map to review the lining detail

Mark the concentrated contact region on the proposed assembly drawing. Request ceramic coverage, joint placement and terminations for that region. Examine support and exposed edges. High hardness does not establish impact tolerance, and an outer-radius wear track does not qualify every retention detail. The proposal should show how the offered construction addresses the documented duty.

Include ash characteristics, operating sequence, temperature and any relevant moisture or chemistry. Review the complete assembly and its attachment under those conditions. A ceramic material's heat resistance cannot establish the limits of joining materials. Keep the supporting shell's structural or pressure acceptance with the responsible equipment process.

Retain old and new records for a bounded comparison

Document the accepted replacement geometry and initial lining condition at identifiable locations. Keep the removed component's evidence alongside it with the differences stated. Later observations can then compare a known region without assuming that two assemblies had identical support, passage or operating exposure. If the process changes, preserve that fact before attributing a different wear pattern to the ceramic.

Send Sanxin the removed-spool map, verified connection drawing and accepted dimensions with the inquiry. Identify which features are fixed and which remain under review. A useful replacement package uses the old part to explain the problem and controlled geometry to define the solution. It does not reproduce damage or an undocumented field repair as though it were the intended design.

Can a worn ash spool be used as the sole manufacturing sample?

It may provide useful wear and fit evidence, but damaged or modified geometry needs verification. Use controlled dimensions and equipment-owner acceptance for the replacement. Preserve the old spool's context while distinguishing original design, approved changes and service damage.
